Making Human Unity a Reality in Today’s World
Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj
Our world is in need of human unity. In our homes, our schools, our places of work, there is a need to come together and embrace each other in a spirit of love, tolerance and oneness. Doing so can help bring about peace in our homes, our neighborhoods, our communities and in the world at large.
How do we live human unity? It is not enough to tell others to practice unity and peace; we must live it ourselves if we want our words to be effective. Here are some ways that have proven effective in making unity a reality:
Clear our hearts
The first step is to make sure that our hearts are clear of any hatred and prejudice for others who are different from us. We must develop true love in our hearts for all people. We must eliminate prejudice and discrimination from our heart and our mind. It is said that out of the abundance of our heart we speak.
If we feel hatred towards any group, we cannot hide it for long; it is bound to come out from our lips or show on our face. Our actions will speak even louder than our words. Thus, living human unity begins with clearing our hearts of any animosity towards others.
When we clean the chamber of our heart from any prejudice and ill will for others, then God can reside there. God is love. God is all-encompassing and embraces all creation as one family. That love will enter our heart when we keep it clear of any negative thoughts towards others.
Watch our words
Next, we live human unity by making sure our words express appreciation and tolerance for all people.
We need to watch our words lest we injure any heart. Do our words cause division or do they bring people together? Loving, caring words that make people feel comfortable bring people together.
We need to become living examples of sweet and loving speech. In whatever situation we find ourselves we should become the example of love, tolerance, and harmony. Over time, others will emulate our example and start to speak in that manner as well.
Live it through our actions
Every day we are faced with choices. Are we going to take action that tears people apart or action that brings people together? In our jobs we often have to work on committees or make decisions on policy. Do our voices promote policies that show love and tolerance towards people, or do they perpetrate more prejudice, discrimination, and bigotry?
At every opportunity, we should inspire the people with whom we work to make decisions and take actions that promote peace and unity.
In this video clip, Sant Rajinder Singh Ji explains how we can experience more unity and connectivity with others as a benefit of spending time in meditation. (01:15).
Meditation and human unity
One of the most effective methods I have come across to make human unity a living reality in our own hearts is through meditation. Spending time daily in silent meditation helps us commune with our true self and the divine Power that created us.
Those moments are filled with bliss, peace, and love. As we enter the inner sanctum of our hearts, we find that there is Light within us.
That Light is the Light of the Creator. The realization dawns on us that the same Light that is within us is in all other human beings. We start to recognize that Light within others. Then the outer differences that separate us start to dissolve. We see one Light expressed by many different outer coverings, each beautiful in its own way.
Just as electricity can flow through bulbs and lamps of many shapes and sizes and still be the same light, so can the Light of the Creator shine in many different human forms, and even animals, fish, birds, and reptiles. We start to see all life as one. When this happens, we are truly living human unity in our own lives.
By sitting in meditation we can increase our own understanding of unity. We will then radiate that example to others in our own sphere of life.
Be an ambassador of human unity
By becoming ambassadors of human unity, we will be living human unity and we can bring about world peace. As we go about our day, let us take stock of where we stand individually and resolve to clear our heart of hatred, filling it with the sweet fragrance of love.
If we have any differences with anyone, let us resolve them. If we are to become true ambassadors of human unity it must reflect in our dealings with others. Let us become imbued with the spirit of human unity in our hearts so that we can spread its noble message wherever we go.

Whether we realize it or not, we are always being watched. By God. Few people go through life conscious of the fact that God is always with us. What we hide from others is an open book to God, as God is All Knowing. What if we knew that God was watching? Would we lead more virtuous lives? Would we be kinder and more loving to others?
Our soul is our true essence. It is the enlivening force by which our bodies work. The soul of each of us is one and the same. Each of our souls is Light. It is one and the same Light that illumines each of our souls. The differences among us are only due to the different vestures in which that Light is embodied.
We can avoid much of the stress, anxiety, and tension that faces us at the mental level by learning the technique of meditation. Meditation is a way to relieve stress at the mental level and help us have a healthy mind. A healthy mind means that we can deal with the challenges of life in a calm, composed way without it causing us to feel upset, depressed, anxious, fearful, or threatened.
The next time we think things are going badly and that God is not listening to us, we should sit back, take a deep breath, and relax. We should give God a chance to let things happen, and observe patiently. We will find when all is said and done that God worked things out for the best in the end.
When we look up at the night sky and think about how far away all the stars and planets appear, we may feel small and alone. The universe is so large and we are so small. However, our body contains the entire macrocosm; it is the residence of God. God is within us. Thus, we are not alone. Our physical body may be small, but our soul is one with God.
