Our Longing to Know God
On the second day of Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj’s program in New York, the hall of the Science of Spirituality Meditation Center in Amityville, Long Island, was filled to capacity. New seekers and disciples from around the world gathered for a talk delivered in Hindi with translations into English and Spanish. Sant Rajinder SinghJi said that most human beings spend their lives praying for worldly needs such as health, wealth, family, or success, believing that fulfillment lies in the outer world. Yet the saints and mystics, he explained, have always guided humanity toward a deeper prayer: the longing to know God.
While we become absorbed in education, careers, possessions, and worldly responsibilities, we often forget the true purpose of human life. Out of the 8.4 million life forms in creation, it is the human body alone that has been endowed with the faculties needed to realize God. Our true identity, the spiritual Master emphasized, is not the body or the mind, but the soul, the divine spark that gives life to the human form. This realization of our true self, he said, naturally leads to God-realization, as the soul begins to yearn for reunion with its Source.
To connect with God, Sant Rajinder Singh Ji said, we must rid ourselves of the ego, which creates duality and separates us from God and from one another. We need to inculcate ethical virtues and learn to live in harmony with God’s Sweet Will. As we connect with the divine Light and Sound through meditation, the mind is gradually stilled and the soul begins to experience inner peace, love, and calmness. This inner transformation naturally reflects in daily life, bringing sweetness, compassion, and balance into our interactions with others. It is the saints and spiritual Master who awaken humanity from the dream of worldly illusion and remind us of the spiritual realms beyond this physical world that can be experienced directly through meditation.
