Engineering Your Inner Peace
Today, Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj spoke on “Engineering Your Inner Peace” to a packed auditorium at Madras Research Park, Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras). He studied Electrical Engineering at IIT Madras, earning his Bachelor of Technology in 1967. (He later earned his Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology.)
Crediting the rigorous training he received at IIT Madras, he said that it instilled in him a deep appreciation for the role of hard work, patience, and perseverance in achieving any goal in life. Science and spirituality are two sides of the same coin, the spiritual Master said, as both work towards the betterment of society. Just as scientists present a concept and then conduct experiments to prove or disprove it, so also do the scientists of spirituality—the saints and mystics—conduct experiments within the human body to verify spiritual truths.
Speaking about the tremendous development of science and technology over the last few decades, Sant Rajinder Singh Ji pointed out that while this progress has brought comforts and conveniences of all kinds to our lives, it has not necessarily brought lasting happiness and joy. On the contrary, he said, there is an increased restlessness and anxiety in society today, as our focus remains purely on the physical world, having forgotten our real self. Quoting a poignant verse by the poet saint Sant Darshan Singh Ji Maharaj, he said that while humanity is making new advances into outer space every day, we have yet to reach the heart of our neighbor.
The inner worlds, filled with tremendous Light and beauty, calm and peace, constantly beckon to us, but we are often too absorbed in the outer world to hear their call. We can experience these inner worlds through meditation.
