The Journey from Separation to Union
Addressing a gathering of thousands in Moga, Punjab, Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj focused on a hymn sung by his wife, Mata Rita Ji. The hymn addressed the soul’s yearning to reunite with its eternal Source. Unaware of our true identity, we identify with the physical body and spend our lives pursuing worldly happiness. Yet when suffering confronts us, we turn toward God, seeking the lasting peace and joy that the outer world cannot provide.
Reflecting on the mystery of death, the spiritual Master said that the soul is the body’s life-giving force. When it departs, the body returns to the five elements, reminding us of life’s impermanence and prompting us to ask: Who are we, why are we here, and what is our relationship with God?
The soul has been blessed with the rare gift of human birth, he said. We all have the faculty of discernment and the opportunity to recognize our true purpose. Each of us can find our way back to God. Through meditation on the inner divine Light of God, the soul journeys inward, gradually shedding the coverings that obscure its true nature and awakening to its identity as a conscious being, distinct from the body and mind.
To progress on this journey, the spiritual Master emphasized daily meditation, ethical living, and remembrance of God. Although the mind continually draws our attention toward worldly distractions, we need to learn to return our focus within, developing the stillness needed for spiritual progress in meditation.
