Giving of Ourselves to Help Others

November 15, 2020

Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj presided over the 28th Global Meditation in Place online event today. He expounded on the true meaning of selfless service and explained how we can incorporate it into our lives in the right manner.

To serve selflessly is to help someone with no expectation of a reward for ourselves. It is done to help someone in a difficult state or to alleviate the burdens of a person or a group of people. In the East, it is called seva. Selfless service is an opportunity from God for us to serve as an instrument or conduit through which God brings help to those in need.

It is not we who help, but God. The opportunity to serve is a great blessing. It is also an opportunity for us to realize we are all one and the same, and this helps to curb the ego.

Service should be done in humility, said the spiritual Master, such that we abide by the Golden Rule— “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” We are, after all, serving an extension of ourselves.  It is not how much we do, but how much we do based on what we have. It is not how much we give, but how much we give of ourselves. God has provided us with whatever we have, and selfless service is about opening our hearts and sharing that wealth with others with a genuine intent to help. With this uplifting message, Sant Rajinder Singh Ji placed the gathering in meditation.
