Offer the Gift of Kindness
By Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj
Many times in life we are faced with people who say bad things to us, who verbally abuse us, who criticize us, and call us names. Rather than engage at their level, it is better to offer kindness.
We should not accept these gifts from others. Rather, we should give them the gift of love and kindness. Then their anger has nowhere to go. It remains with them. When we withdraw from the scene then they find themselves alone with their anger. Soon, they realize what they have done. They see how kind we were to them in the face of their adversity.
They then realize with time how lovingly we behaved. Sometimes they wonder how we were able to be loving in the face of their anger, and they come to respect us. Many will even inquire of us how we have developed such loving qualities. When they find that we are following a spiritual path, they may even want to learn more about it so they, too, can learn how to be kind and loving in the face of anger.
As we go about our day and face people filled with anger and criticism toward us we should look at the situation calmly. First, we should ask whether their words have any truth to them. If so, then we can take it as a lesson to improve ourselves.
Next, if their words do not have any truth to them, then we should return their gift of anger and instead offer only love and kindness. In this way, we can maintain our equanimity and peacefulness.
If they see how calm we are, they too may want to learn the secrets of humility we learned. We add calmness to an otherwise hostile environment.
We should leave the gift of anger with them and go on our peaceful, merry ways. They will see our example and, over time, they may want to learn to be like us. In this way, our humility can play a hand in transforming others and changing the world. Thus, we have kept our attention on our spiritual goals, and we have become a positive influence in our environment.

Wherever he goes, the spiritual Master carries the message that as we learn how to meditate we will enhance our spiritual growth. One of the key benefits of meditation is that it can make our lives an oasis of peace and love amidst the challenges of life.
If we look at the qualities for excellence in the field of sports, we will find they also apply to spirituality. In the physical Olympics there can only be one gold medalist, but in the field of meditation and spirituality each of us can win the gold medal.
Pain and suffering are an inevitable part of our spiritual journey. It may come as the catalyst for our spiritual life. It may occur along the way of our spiritual journey. It may come as a way to keep us focused on praying to God for help. It may serve as a reminder that the only true happiness is in that of the spirit.
As we journey within through meditation, we realize that God is all Light. We realize that as soul we are also a ray of the same divine Light. We begin to see that the same Light of God which is within us is also in all other beings in creation.
The soul is a spark of God, and as God is love, our soul is also love, pure and simple. It is the enlivening force within us. It is a source of tremendous wisdom, love, and power, yet we remain ignorant of its treasures when we allow it to be overpowered by the mind, the senses, and the physical body.
Being unconnected with our inner core or soul causes pain. The pain may manifest as a continual restlessness for something of which we are not aware. We rush around trying to find happiness in outer pursuits and are confused when the happiness we thought we would gain eludes us. We know there is something missing, yet we know not what it is.
