Earth Day

Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj

On April 22, people around the world are celebrating Earth Day—a day to be grateful for the natural resources this planet provides to sustain life. It is also a day to take action to ensure that these are available to future generations.earth day Rajinder Singh

Honoring the earth is a form of nonviolence, in which we treat our planet with loving care. This includes all its inhabitants from humanity to animals and plants. This planet is a beautiful gem in the vastness of space. We are all one family living on Earth, and just as families help each other, we need to find ways to all live together peacefully.

While living here, we want to make sure the quality of life for ourselves, our family, and the world—both now and for generations to come—is such that we can lead our lives in a healthy way and have enough resources for our sustenance.

While taking care of the planet, we also want to take care of ourselves by developing physically, mentally, and spiritually. We can grow spiritually through meditation, leading ethical lives, and being of service to others.

Part of spirituality is serving others and giving. We have a responsibility to give to other people and to the planet. The Divine is shining in every atom of creation. Let us celebrate Earth Day by caring for our planet, all humanity, the plants, and the animals, while growing spiritually, to make the best use of the blessing of life we have been given.

Yet, often we are not faced with the challenge of staying cool because we find a way to minimize the effects of excessive heat. We may use air-conditioning, fans, or remain in the shade. Our attempt is to keep our physical body cool.

On Mother’s Day let us honor God and our mother for bringing us into this world and giving us love and care. We should extend this gratitude not just on the second Sunday of May, but every day of our lives.

The Spiritual Aspect of Earth Day

Taking care of the earth means that we do not only think of ourselves, but we expand our mind, hearts, and souls to consider our planet and all forms of life that inhabit it. We can do so by opening our hearts in a spirit of humility, compassion, selflessness, and gratitude.
