Mother’s Day

By Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj

I wish everyone all over the world a Happy Mother’s Day. This is a holiday that began in America to honor one’s mother. It is celebrated as the second Sunday in May. Yet, Mother’s Day should be honored not only on one day a year, but every day and every minute of our lives. We can honor our mothers by showing them gratitude for all the love and care they gave us.

A mother’s love is a reflection of God’s love for us. God is our true Parent. Without God none of us would be here. We can get an inkling about God’s love for us by seeing what mothers do for their children.

God’s love for us is selfless. A mother’s love is the closest analogy we can have for selfless love in the world.

A mother gives everything to her child without even thinking of her own needs. She undergoes the hardship of carrying the child for nine months in the womb, to the pain of childbirth, to the sleepless nights of caring for a crying infant.

She must bathe, feed, and care for him or her.  The mother must deal with the difficulties of a toddler who exercises independence by running all over the place. As a child grows and reaches the teen years, the mother is there to meet every need. Even when the child grows up, gets married, settles, has a family, and reaches middle age or the senior years, the mother is still a mother and loves and worries as much as she did when the child was young.

God loves us much more than a mother does for her child. No matter in what stage of life we are, God loves us dearly and wants the best for us. Whether we remember God or not, the Creator remembers and cares for us.

For this love, each of us needs to be grateful to God and our mothers.

There is a beautiful expression that says, “It does not cost anything to smile.” And that smile can brighten someone else’s life. That person in turn may bring good cheer to others that he or she meets. This cycle continues and our one smile . . .

The Power of Loving-kindness

Part of our spiritual progress is based on developing a kind spirit. To do this, we need to put ourselves in the shoes of others. It means feeling the joys and pains of others. We can ask ourselves if the words we say to others are the words we want others to say to us.

As we think about honoring our fathers on this day, let us also think about honoring our Universal Father and Mother, God, who created our fathers. The best way to do this is to remember and be thankful for the gifts we have received.
